During the month of May we have had approximately 16 cases throughout the entire school district. These cases represent staff and students. Most cases are now being reported via at home test kits. We also want to make you aware that this week four individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. These cases are associated with all
three schools. 

March 2, 2022

Please be aware that beginning next week, masks will be optional for students, staff, and visitors at the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District. Masks will now also be optional on buses beginning March 7th.

In addition, please be aware that we are expanding cafeteria service in all three schools beginning next week. All students will resume eating in the cafeteria.

February 8, 2022

Four individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. All four cases are associated with Sussex Middle School. We consistently maintain collaboration with the Sussex County Department of Health regarding instances of COVID-19. All close contacts have already been notified. These cases will not impact our in person operations. 

January 25, 2022

Five individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. Two cases are associated with Lawrence School and three cases are associated with Wantage School. We consistently maintain collaboration with the Sussex County Department of Health regarding instances of COVID-19. All close contacts have already been notified. These cases will not impact our in person operations. 

January 21, 2022

Throughout the week, ten cases of COVID-19 were associated with Lawrence School, thirteen cases were associated with Wantage School, and ten cases were associated with Sussex Middle School. We consistently maintain collaboration with the Sussex County Department of Health regarding instances of COVID-19. All close contacts have already been notified. These cases will not impact our in person operations.

December 21, 2021

Eleven individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. Four cases are associated with Lawrence School, six cases are associated with Wantage School, and one case is associated with Sussex Middle School. We consistently maintain collaboration with the Sussex County Department of Health regarding instances of COVID-19. The Lawrence School instance has necessitated the quarantining of one entire classroom. Most of the Wantage school cases were not on our campus at the time we received the notification because of our previous classroom quarantines. All close contacts, as well as the classroom impacted in this instance have already been notified. These cases will not impact our in person operations. 

December 10, 2021

Five individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. Two cases are associated with Lawrence School and three cases are associated with Wantage School. We consistently maintain collaboration with the Sussex County Department of Health regarding instances of COVID-19. The Wantage School  instance has necessitated the quarantining of one entire classroom. All close contacts, as well as the classroom impacted in this instance have already been notified. These cases will not impact our in person operations. 

December 6, 2021

Eleven individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. Two cases are associated with Lawrence School, eight cases are associated with Wantage School, and one case is associated with Sussex Middle School. We consistently maintain collaboration with the Sussex County Department of Health regarding instances of COVID-19. This instance has necessitated the quarantining of one entire classroom. All close contacts, as well as, the classroom impacted in this instance have already been notified. These cases will not impact our in person operations.

Twelve individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. Two cases are associated with the Clifton E. Lawrence School, three cases are associated with Wantage School, and seven cases are associated with Sussex Middle School. November 22, 2021

November 16, 2021

November 10, 2021

Three individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. One case is associated with Clifton E. Lawrence School, one case is associated with Sussex Middle School, and one case is associated with Wantage School. We consistently maintain collaboration with the Sussex County Department of Health and there were no close contacts on our campus due to the extended break last weekend.  These cases will not impact our in person operations. 

October 15, 2021

Three individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. One case is associated with a transportation provider,  one case is associated with Sussex Middle School, and one case is associated with the Wantage School. We have been in contact with the Sussex County Department of Health and there were no close contacts on our campus. These cases will not impact our in person operations.

One individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. This case is associated with the Lawrence School and necessitated the quarantining of one classroom. This classroom has already been notified. We have been in contact with the Sussex County Department of Health and all close contacts have been notified. This case will not impact our in person operations. 

September 22, 2021

Seven individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. Two cases are associated with the Lawrence School, two cases are associated with the Wantage School, one case is associated with a transportation service provider, and the other two cases are associated with Sussex Middle School. Three individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District have tested positive for COVID-19. Each school in the district has one confirmed case. We have been in contact with the Sussex County Department of Health and no further action needs to be taken at this time. These cases will not impact our in person operations. 

June 8, 2021

In accordance with Governor Murphy’s statement yesterday and Executive Order 175, the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District is relaxing mask requirements for staff and students in our district through the end of the school year due to the perceived extreme heat. Based on this information, students and staff may remove their masks during the extreme temperatures we are facing both outdoors and indoors on a voluntary basis for the rest of the year. This also applies to our school buses. 

Individuals can certainly still choose to wear a mask. Please continue to maintain physical distance and be respectful of those who choose to wear a mask.

We have been in contact with the Sussex County Department of Health and no further action needs to be taken at this time. These cases will not impact our in person operations.

One individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District tested positive for COVID-19. The individual has not been on our campus for some time and there were no close contacts identified. Therefore, this case will not impact our in person operations.  

April 12, 2021

We had 15 individuals test positive for COVID-19 during Spring Break as follows:
Clifton E. Lawrence School- 4
Wantage Elementary School- 5
Sussex Middle School- 6

These cases occurred during Spring Break and therefore will not impact our in person operations. Please understand that as we become aware of COVID-19 positive individuals we will continue to keep you informed in accordance with NJDOE guidelines.

April 3, 2021

One individual associated with the Clifton E. Lawrence School and one individual associated with Wantage Elementary School have tested positive for COVID-19. In both cases, close contacts have already been notified by our staff. We also continue to work closely with the Department of Health as necessary. These cases will not impact our in person operations due to being on Spring Break.

Two individuals associated with the Clifton E. Lawrence School have tested positive for COVID-19. In the first case, the individual has been operating remotely and no further action will be taken. In the second case, contact tracing was conducted and all close contacts have been notified. The Department of Health has also been informed. These cases will not impact our in person operations. 

March 17, 2021

One individual associated with Wantage Elementary School has tested positive for COVID-19. In this case, the individual has been operating remotely and will not impact our operations. The Department of Health has been informed and no further action will be taken.

March 10, 2021

Two individuals at Sussex Middle School have tested positive for COVID-19.  One individual also tested positive for COVID-19 at the Clifton E. Lawrence School. The Department of Health (DOH) has been notified and contact tracing was conducted. In all of these instances, the individuals who were deemed to be close contacts have been notified. In addition to these instances, we are writing to inform you that no close contacts were identified from our last Board of Education meeting concerning the COVID positive case.  At this time all schools remain operational for in person instruction. 

March 5, 2021

One individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19. This case is associated with Sussex Middle School. The Department of Health (DOH) has been notified, contact tracing was conducted, and notifications have been completed.  At this time, we do not anticipate this case impacting our in person operations. In addition to this case, we were informed that an individual who attended last evening’s Board of Education meeting subsequently tested positive for COVID-19 via a rapid test. The DOH will oversee contact tracing and notifications concerning this case. Anyone who would be deemed a close contact will be notified through the DOH. This case does not impact our school operations.

March 4, 2021

One individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19. This case is associated with Sussex Middle School. The Department of Health has been notified and contact tracing is being conducted. At this time, we do not anticipate this case impacting our in person operations. One individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19. At this time, we perceive that this case is isolated to Sussex Middle School. The individual has not been on campus for enough time to ensure that this case will not impact in person operations. No further action will be taken.

One individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19. At this time, we perceive this case may be isolated to the Clifton E. Lawrence Elementary School. We have notified the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) and they are conducting contact tracing. We will continue to update you as more information becomes available.

One individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19. We continue to remain in contact with the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) as needed. In this instance our nursing staff has conducted contact tracing and all close contacts have been notified.

One individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19. We continue to remain in contact with the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) as needed. In this instance the individual has not had any “close contact” with district stakeholders due to the recent inclement weather closure. Therefore, no further action will be taken and this case will not impact our operations.

January 22, 2021

We have two unrelated individuals with COVID-19 compatible symptoms in our school community. We have notified the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) and followed their guidance in order to ensure the health and safety of our school community. One case impacted CEL and the other WES. All close contacts have already been notified. These cases will not impact our operations for next week and school will be in person using our cohort model. 

January 15, 2021

We have three individuals in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District have tested positive for COVID-19. We have notified the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) and are following their guidance in order to ensure the health and safety of our school community. Due to our remote instruction status, no further action will be taken.

January 8, 2021

We have five unrelated individuals with COVID-19 compatible symptoms in our school community. At this time, we also have one additional COVID positive individual. Due to the Department of Health's classification of our region as "High-Risk" or "orange" we are required to exercise more caution and to treat these cases aggressively as if they were already confirmed. We have notified the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) and followed their guidance in order to ensure the health and safety of our school community. 

Based upon these new developments and the recommendation of the DOH, the most prudent response at this juncture is to continue remote instruction for next week. All Sussex-Wantage Schools will be closed to in person instruction next week. During that time, all students should continue to attend their classes virtually. In person instruction is now scheduled to resume on Tuesday, January 19th with Cohort B students. (Monday January 18th, schools are closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day).

December 23, 2020 

As we approach this holiday season, I am writing to update you on how we will proceed moving forward given the guidelines provided by the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH). As previously shared, the COVID activity level in our region is at a “high” activity level. Due to this high activity level, the DOH has expressed a great deal of concern about the spread of the virus because of the upcoming winter holidays. To address that concern, our district will be moving to a remote model of instruction for one week following the winter break. 

School will be remote from Monday, January 4th to Friday, January 8th. This provides an additional period after New Year’s Day to reduce the risk of holiday symptom spread exposure. School is anticipated to reopen to in-person instruction on Monday, January 11th using our cohort model. Please remember that if you travel during the holiday season, please monitor the NJDOH Travel Restrictions using the link below. 

The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the regular seasonal influenza and include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. Some have reported additional symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, loss of taste, loss of smell, and diarrhea. Individuals who need medical care should call their medical provider to report their illness prior to seeking care at a clinic, physician’s office, or hospital. We will continue to keep you updated in the event these plans need to be modified. We sincerely hope that the new year finds you and your family safe with the ability to rejoice and find peace during these challenging times.

We have notified the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) and followed their guidance in order to ensure the health and safety of our school community. At this time, everyone who was deemed to be a “close contact” has been notified by our nursing staff.

These instances have impacted our school operations as they have resulted in a significant number of individuals being required to quarantine which constrains our ability to operate. The most prudent response at this juncture is to continue remote instruction for next week. All Sussex-Wantage Schools will be closed to in person instruction next week. During that time, all students should continue to attend their classes virtually.

We have notified the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) and are following their guidance in order to ensure the health and safety of our school community. At this time, all individuals who were deemed to be close contacts have already been notified by our nursing staff and no additional action will be taken.

An individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19. We have notified the Sussex County Department of Health (DOH) and followed their guidance in order to ensure the health and safety of our school community. In this instance the individual has been operating remotely and has not been on our school district campus. Therefore, this circumstance will not impact our school community operations and no further action will be taken. 

November 22, 2020

On Friday, I shared a letter with the Sussex-Wantage Community discussing the operational challenges that we face due to the rising cases of COVID-19. As I mentioned, the Department of Health (DOH) has indicated that they do expect us to move to a “Very High” (Red) Activity Level in the near future which will then pivot us into all remote learning after Thanksgiving. 

We do still anticipate remaining open this upcoming week, but going fully remote beginning on Wednesday.  At this time, all students will be following their normal in person A or B cohort schedule for Monday and Tuesday on an early dismissal schedule. Wednesday will be a normal all remote day, but will run on an early dismissal schedule. Beginning Wednesday, November 25th, the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District will be switching to full remote instruction through Friday, December 11th. Although this period of remote instruction may eventually be extended based on DOH recommendations, at this time, we hope to resume in person instruction on Monday, December 14th while continuing to follow our cohort A or B model. 

I would also like to reinforce that the possibility still exists, given the current statistical trends, that fully remote instruction could extend up to two weeks after the New Year’s Holiday, or through January 18th.  We will continue to monitor the situation, collaborate with the DOH, and keep the community informed, but everyone should prepare for that possibility.

As a reminder, if your child is experiencing any symptoms of illness, we are requesting that they stay home from school and contact our school nurses. As more information becomes available I will continue to keep you informed.  I sincerely hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

I am writing to update you on our most recent COVID-19 positive case as well as provide you with an update concerning future operations. At this time, all individuals who were deemed to be close contacts of our current COVID-19 positive case have been notified by one of our school nurses. If you were not notified by our nurse, you should not anticipate being contacted by the Department of Health (DOH). The DOH has increased the COVID-19 Activity Level for our region from Moderate to High. The High Level designation will significantly impact the way our school district is able to continue to function. 

The High Activity Level requires the school district to contact trace and quarantine all students and staff who come into contact with anyone with COVID-19 compatible symptoms. Close contacts of an individual with COVID-19 symptoms should be excluded through 14 days from the date of last contact, or until the ill individual receives an alternate diagnosis or tests negative for COVID-19. We appreciate the way our students, staff, and parents have been adhering to all protocols and guidelines to support a safe school environment. If your child or anyone in your immediate family is experiencing any symptoms consistent with COVID-19, we are requesting that they stay home from school and contact our school nurses. We will transition these students to remote status immediately. 

Please know that the health and well-being of our students, staff, and the entire school community are of the utmost importance to us. As more information becomes available I will continue to keep you informed.

November 19, 2020

An individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19.   We have contacted the Sussex County Department of Health and have begun the contact tracing process. 

In order to afford the district time to collaborate with the Department of Health we will not have in person instruction tomorrow, Friday, November 20th. All students should attend their classes virtually tomorrow on a half day schedule.  Those individuals who are considered close contacts will receive a preliminary phone call from our nursing staff and a follow up phone call from the Department of Health regarding requirements for quarantining. 

If you have any questions about your child's remote instruction, please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher or principal. Anyone needing medical care is encouraged to contact their medical provider. We are closely monitoring the situation and will notify families if any additional actions need to be taken in the near future. We will update you once the nurse notification process has concluded.

I hope this letter finds everyone healthy and safe. As you are aware, our school district has worked closely with the Sussex County and New Jersey Departments of Health (DOH) and the New Jersey Department of Education to implement the required procedures in response to COVID-19. Recently, we were informed by the DOH that the current data indicate that our region is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases and is moving from a region of moderate risk (yellow) to high risk (orange). If the region becomes high risk, the DOH protocols for handling positive, probable, and possible COVID-19 cases in schools become more stringent, as do the standards for contact tracing and quarantine. The New Jersey DOH recommends that school districts consider moving to fully remote learning in the event our regional status changes to high risk (orange). Should the risk level increase and a need for full remote instruction arise, our school district may need to pivot quickly on the recommendation of the DOH to remote learning for all students. A decision of this nature won’t be made lightly. It will be based on data and guidance from our DOH. The purpose of this notification is to give you as much notice as possible that taking such an action may become necessary and may be for an extended time. Everyone should begin to prepare for that possibility. Please know that the health and well-being of our students, staff, and the entire school community are of the utmost importance to us. I anticipate receiving updated data from the DOH by this weekend and will continue to keep you informed.

November 11, 2020

An individual in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District has tested positive for COVID-19. We are currently coordinating with the Sussex County Department of Health and following their guidance in order to ensure the health and safety of our community.
Out of an abundance of caution, contact tracing is being conducted back to Wednesday, November 4th. At this time we perceive this to be isolated to a bus for Cohort B. Those individuals who are considered close contacts will receive a preliminary phone call from our nursing staff and a follow up phone call from the Department of Health regarding requirements for quarantining. Considering that at this time, this is a single case that is not perceived to impact Cohort A, and in consultation with the Department of Health, Sussex-Wantage will remain open for the remainder of the week on our Cohort A and B schedule.

October 6, 2020

We have received the results confirming the rapid test and it was, in fact, positive.
I have been in contact with the Sussex County Department of Health. They have completed their contract tracing process and have notified everyone who was deemed to be a close contact of the COVID-19 positive individual. The notification process has concluded. Once again the notification process is done. Any areas of our schools associated with this matter have already been disinfected as appropriate.
Also, to make you aware, the positive case appears to be associated with contact from a member outside of the school community which was unrelated to school. The individual did not know their positive status until Sunday, was asymptomatic, and notified the District immediately. However, despite this, it has impacted our school operations as it has resulted in a significant number of individuals being required to quarantine which constrains our ability to operate. The most prudent response at this juncture is to continue full remote instruction for the duration of this week and next week. During that time, all students should continue to attend their classes virtually on a daily basis. School will resume for in person instruction on Monday, October 19th for Cohort A and on Tuesday, October 20th for Cohort B. As a reminder there will be no virtual instruction on Monday, October 12th in observance of Columbus Day.
If you have any questions about your childs remote instruction, please dont hesitate to contact your childs teacher or principal. Anyone who perceives that they may need medical care is encouraged to contact their medical provider. It is also important to note that each COVID-19 circumstance that we experience will be handled on a case by case basis and may not necessarily result in full remote instruction. However, I have reflected on this decision a great deal, consulted our nursing staff and our district physician, and have been in touch with the Department of Health. I feel it is prudent to take decisive action to neutralize this issue and ensure our health and safety. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused and thank you for your patience as we worked through this challenge together.

As you may have heard, Governor Murphy recently released the fall reopening guidelines for schools. This “Road Back” guide contains information that our school district will need to consider and plan for in order to reopen in the fall. You should also be aware that our district had already begun the process of planning in advance of the Governor’s guidance in order to adequately prepare. As we continue to work to create our district plans for reentry, your insight and perspective are essential to the success of our reopening plan.

We will be hosting a community forum to provide parents and community members with the opportunity to directly share questions, concerns, and ideas with the school district. Our next meeting will be held on July 8th at 7:00 pm via Google Meet.

The purpose of this meeting will be to listen to the concerns of our parents and community members and highlight elements of the plan provided by the New Jersey Department of Education. In subsequent meetings, we will brief the community on our progress in developing our restart plans and procedures. Governor Murphy has announced that all in-person instruction has been cancelled for the 2019-20 school year; remote learning will continue through the anticipated last day of school. Clarification regarding scheduling, retrieving belongings, graduation, extended-school year (summer) instruction, plans for closing and reopening will be forthcoming as soon as possible over the coming weeks.  

During a press conference held on Thursday, April 16, 2020, Governor Murphy announced that all NJ schools will remain closed through Friday, May 15, 2020. In an effort to provide clear and concise guidance to the members of our school community, please be advised that at this time the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District will be extending the school closure through 5/15/20. All school activities will be cancelled through 5/15/20. Please anticipate receiving more information in the near future regarding the possibility of trip and activity refunds as we continue to work with our various vendors.

We will continue to reevaluate and assess the situation based upon current information and directives from Governor Murphy, the New Jersey Department of Education, and the New Jersey Department of Health on a weekly basis.
