Should I or Shouldn’t I Send my Child to School Today?
General Guidelines From Your School Nurse:
In an effort to safeguard your child’s health and the health of all the children in our school, we have a few suggestions which will help stop the spread of infection among students and staff. These guidelines should be used as a reference point to aid you in making a sound decision regarding school attendance.
Strep Throat- Child may return to school 24-48 hours after the first dose of antibiotic therapy has been started, provided the child is feeling well enough to attend and does not present with other symptoms.
Fever - Child may return to school when the temperature has been normal for 24 hours. Tylenol (acetaminophen), Motrin or Advil (ibuprofen) may lower an elevated temperature, therefore the child should be off any of these medications for 24 hours as well.
Cold - Child should stay home if he/she is too uncomfortable to complete his/her work. Child should also stay home if he/she has a severe cough.
Vomiting/Diarrhea - Child should be symptom free for 24 hours and be able to hold down food and fluids before returning to school.
Pink Eye/Conjuctivitis – Needs 3 sets of drops and no drainage and/or crusting in the morning, before returning to school.
***Any student out for 3 days or more – requires an MD note to return to
school. Please remember, good nutrition and hand washing are our #1 way,
to prevent the spread of disease. If still in doubt, call your child’s school nurse with your questions and/or concerns.
